esta pintura representa un episodio de la leyenda de roderick , el último rey de los visigodos españoles . Después de espiar a sus damas de honor para determinar la más bella entre ellos , el rey escogió florinda ( en el centro a la izquierda ) , quien se convirtió en el objeto de su amor . En venganza , Florinda's padre llamó a los árabes a españa y provocó la conquista . Esta pintura , que fue mostrado en el salón de 1853 , es una réplica de una versión del mismo tamaño dado por la reina victoria con el príncipe alberto en 1852 . winterhalter usó una composición similar para la emperatriz eugenia rodeada de ella Ladies-in-Waiting ( 1855 ; Museo Nacional du Palacio , Compiègne ) .
