Il lavoro risale al Dürer's soggiorno a venezia , ed era stato commissionato da jacob fugger , intermediario tra l'imperatore massimiliano i e papa giulio ii , durante painter's rimanere come banker's ospite ad augusta . il contratto fu rinnovato nella città italiana dalle confraternite dei commercianti di norimberga ( Dürer's città natale ) e da altre città tedesche , quest'ultimo è supportato dalla famiglia fugger . Secondo il contratto , il dipinto , essere ospitato nella chiesa della nazione tedesca a venezia , san bartolomeo a rialto , dovrebbe essere finito prima di maggio 1506 . il soggetto era la festa del rosario , un tema legato al particolare culto che i cittadini tedeschi a venezia avevano verso la madonna del rosario .
