Un quarto gli soffia una conchiglia nell'orecchio nel tentativo di svegliarlo . La scena è ambientata in una foresta , e lo sfondo mostra , nella distanza , il mare da cui è emersa venere . Uno sciame di vespe si aggira intorno Mars' testa , forse come simbolo che l'amore è spesso accompagnato dal dolore . un'altra possibile spiegazione è che le vespe rappresentano la famiglia vespucci che potrebbe aver commissionato il dipinto ; il simbolo della casa vespucci è la vespa . Si pensa che il dipinto fosse originariamente il retro di un lettuccio , un divano in legno . [
