Around 1890, Penrose left Ireland alongside his father and the rest of his family to settle in Hertfordshire, near London. One such work, Iduna, Daughter of Svald, dates to about 1890. This interest in the spiritual and the legendary sat alongside a more grounded, observational side of his practice. His connection to his in-laws in the Isle of Ely influenced a specific chapter of his work involving the Woad industry. He spent time documenting the mills and the labor associated with this trade near Wisbech. This is seen in The Interior of the Woad Mill at Parson Drove, Cambridgeshire from 1906 and Work at the Old Woad Mill from 1908. These paintings provide a window into the industrial life of the region. He also turned his hand to portraiture, including a work of Alexander Penrose, Baron Peckover of Wisbech, LLD, FLS, FRGS (1830-1919) around 1902. Beyond the canvas, he also worked in sculpture, creating a piece of his father-in-law.
