النشأة والتعليم
ولد كارل أندريه في كوينسي بولاية ماساتشوستس في السادس عشر من سبتمبر عام 1935، في كنف أب كان خبيراً في تصميم أنظمة السباكة للمياه العذبة في السفن.
تلقى تعليمه في مدارس كوينسي الحكومية، ثم التحق بأكاديمية فيليبس في أندوفير، ماساتشوستس (1951-1953).
خلال سنوات دراسته في أكاديمية فيليبس، نشأت بينه وبين هوليس فرامبتون صداقة عميقة تركت أثراً بالغاً في مساره الفني، حيث ساهمت نقاشاتهما حول الفن وتعريف فرامبتون له بفنانين آخرين في تشكيل رؤيته الإبداعية.
قضى أندريه فترة خدمته في الجيش الأمريكي في ولاية كارولاينا الشمالية ما بين عامي 1955 و1956.
انتقل إلى مدينة نيويورك في عام 1956، وهناك قدمه فرامبتون إلى رواد الفن مثل كونستانتين برانكوزي وفرانك ستيلا، مما أدى إلى مشاركة مرسم واحد مع ستيلا في الفترة من 1958 إلى 1960.

تجربة العمل اليدوي: بين عامي 1960 و1964، عمل أندريه كعامل فرامل ومراقب شحن في سكة حديد بنسلفانيا بنيوجيرسي؛ وقد انعكست هذه التجربة مع العمل اليدوي والطبيعة المنظمة لعمل السكك الحديدية بشكل كبير على منحوتاته اللاحقة وأسلوبه الشخصي الذي كان يظهر غالباً بملابس العمل (الأوفرول).
