A Life in Form and Faith

Alfred Schöpffe was a German visual artist, painter, and graphic artist. Born in Kassel, Germany, his journey as a creator was shaped by diverse training, beginning with studies under the painter Otto Friedrich Pape, where he learned as a commercial graphic designer, exhibition designer, and trade illustrator. Following his service as a soldier during the Second World War and subsequent time in captivity, he pursued formal studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. During his time there, he was a master student and studied etching under Jonny Friedländer in Salzburg.

His artistic practice was remarkably expansive, encompassing oil and watercolor painting, mural painting, and various forms of printmaking, including etching, lithography, monotype, and woodcut. Beyond these mediums, Schöpffe worked with enamel, glass, mosaic, and textile art. His professional life was deeply intertwined with the sacred and the civic; he served as an art teacher and was commissioned to decorate numerous churches and municipal buildings, including the town hall and community hall in Grafing.

Artistic Themes and Legacy

The work of Alfred Schöpffe is characterized by a movement from naturalistic beginnings toward a condensed, essentialist style, often associated with late expressionism. His compositions frequently centered on religious themes, exploring the life and teachings of Christ, such as his birth, death, and resurrection. He also dedicated a portfolio of works to the life and actions of Saint Francis.

In addition to his religious commissions, Schöpffe’s oeuvre included secular subjects, such as his cycle titled Bayern am Beispiel des Landkreises Ebersberg, which touched upon local traditions like the Leonhardifahrt. His technical experimentation was particularly evident in his printmaking, where he sought to create works that functioned as more than mere images, but as forms capable of carrying a message. His legacy is preserved in various collections and public spaces across Germany, including Munich, Freising, and Ebersberg.
