Early Life, Family and Training

Ewoud de Kat enters the world in Vlissingen on 10 March 1904. He is born into a family tied to the industrial rhythm of the Netherlands; his father, Cornelis de Kat, manages modelmakers at the NV Koninklijke Maatschappij De Schelde shipyard. While his brothers follow the path of the maritime industry, Ewoud de Kat looks toward the visual arts. His early training begins in the local drawing school of Gerard Jacobs, where he first learns to translate the world onto paper.

The focus shifts from Vlissingen to Rotterdam. Between 1922 and 1926, he enters the Academy of Fine Arts and Technical Sciences. Here, the formal education intensifies under the guidance of Herman Mees and David Bautz. These years in the academy provide the technical foundation for a career that will eventually span both the easel and the classroom.

Life and Career in Rotterdam and Haarlem

After completing his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts and Technical Sciences in Rotterdam, the transition from student to educator begins. He establishes himself in the city, working as a teacher of drawing and art history. This period in Rotterdam marks a professional stabilization, grounding his technical training in a pedagogical role. He remains active in the city's artistic landscape, balancing his own creative development with the instruction of others.

The year 1935 brings a shift in geography. He moves to Haarlem, a move that defines the next several decades of his life. In this new setting, he secures a position as a teacher at the ulo. His presence in Haarlem is long-lasting, spanning over thirty years of consistent instruction. He remains a fixture in the local educational scene until his retirement in 1969.

Technique and Artistic Style

De Kat works across a variety of media, utilizing watercolor, gouache, and oil paint to build his compositions. His early output focuses on the rugged realities of rural and maritime life, capturing farmers, fishermen, landscapes, and seascapes. These subjects are rendered with a powerful expressionistic character. He employs intense, bright colors, often contrasted against a dramatic use of black to define form and mood.

A shift occurs in 1948. Following a stay in Paris, the influence of French Cubists enters his practice. This contact with the 'Ecole de Paris' alters his approach to subject matter. The once-literal depictions of the landscape and its inhabitants begin to move toward abstraction. His style becomes increasingly cubist in character, trading pure expressionism for a more structured, geometric interpretation of his surroundings.

Circle, Pupils and Legacy

The influence of de Kat extended into the creative lives of his family and students. His son, the architect Kees de Kat, followed a path of structural design, while his nephew, the sculptor of the same name, pursued three-dimensional form. Within the studio and classroom settings, his technical guidance shaped the hands of others, including the draftsman Theo van Kempen and the sculptor Kees de Kat.

His presence in the Dutch art landscape remains anchored in regional collections and retrospective recognition. In 2007, museum De Schotse Huizen in Veere hosted a retrospective of his work, bringing his visual language back to the public eye. His legacy persists through these institutional acknowledgments and the continued presence of his paintings in various collections.
