Born in Brooklyn in 1942, Gary Stephan is an American abstract painter who has exhibited his work throughout the United States and Europe. His academic foundation began with studies in industrial design at the Parsons School of Design and the Pratt Institute, followed by a Master of Fine Arts degree from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1967. After returning to New York, he served as a studio assistant to Jasper Johns before beginning to show his work with the David Whitney Gallery in 1970. His presence in the art world was noted by the New York Times, which referred to his work as being among the most closely watched developments of the early 1970s.

Through the use of discontinuous areas of similar color, he creates the impression of singular shapes. His achievements have been recognized through several prestigious honors, including fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His pieces are held in permanent collections such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, as well as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
