The Form and the Figure
Hans Kohl was a man of lines and light, a painter and graphic designer whose life was deeply rooted in the German landscape. Born in Mainz, Germany, he spent his formative years absorbing the visual language of his surroundings. His education took him to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he studied from 1915 until 1923. During these years, he learned under several influential teachers, including Max Doerner, Julius Exter, Adolf von Hegeler, Ludwig von Herterich, and Angelo Jank. It was under the guidance of Peter Halm that Kohl’s early work took on a specific character, particularly his etchings from 1918 to 1920 that explored the theme of Das Goldene Mainz.
His technical skill was diverse. From Doerner, he mastered the ancient technique of encaustic painting, a method involving heated wax that gave his work a unique physical presence. Kohl became known for his ability to place human figures within classical landscapes, creating a sense of stillness and permanence. He was a portraitist by nature, capturing the likenesses of significant figures such as Pope Pius XI, Bishop Albert Stohr, and Mayor Karl Göttelmann.
A Life Shaped by History
The mid-20th century brought profound changes to Kohl's life and the world he inhabited. His path was interrupted by the Second World War, during which he served as a soldier. The hardships of the conflict led him into Russian captivity, a period of survival that preceded his return to Mainz in 1945. After the war, he eventually settled in Heppenheim an der Bergstraße, living and working in the Alte Mühle for many years.
His artistic output during the 1930s included works featuring groups of nude men and women. He also contributed to the spiritual architecture of his time, painting the three large walls of the altar room in the Lutherkirche in Offenbach-Bieber during 1934 and 1935. While these biblical scenes faced scrutiny after the war due to their heroic style, they remain valued by the local congregation today.
Throughout his career, Kohl was an active participant in the artistic community, holding memberships in several organizations:
- Mainzer Verein bildender Künstler
- Hessischer Künstlerkartell
- Frankfurter Künstlergemeinschaft
Legacy and Presence
Kohl’s work remains part of the historical record, held in collections such as the Bavarian State Painting Collections in Munich. His ability to blend the human form with the natural world allowed him to leave a distinct mark on German painting. He passed away in 1990 in Hambach, leaving behind a body of work that reflects the complexities of a life lived through a century of immense change.
