The Art of T. E. Breitenbach

Thomas E. Breitenbach is an American artist born in Queens, New York. He is best known for his painting Proverbidioms, which provides a depiction of over 300 common proverbs and clichés. His earlier works consisted of dark allegories using archetypal symbols. In 1970, he collaborated with Jim Morrison of The Doors on a painting intended for the album An American Prayer.

Breitenbach's technique involves traditional Flemish oil-glazes, a meticulous process where light penetrates transparent paint layers to strike white gesso panels. His work includes several puzzle paintings such as:

  • Proverbidioms
  • Catchpenny
  • Shakespearience
  • A Picture of Health

Other Creative Works

Beyond visual arts, Breitenbach has engaged in various creative endeavors. He wrote the illustrated fantasy novel Grumparar's the New Creatures and a book of local ghost stories. He also composed music for films produced by his son and created two musicals, including Hieronymus, A Musical Fantasy, which is about Hieronymus Bosch.
