Jacques Offenbach was a German-born French composer, cellist and impresario. He is best known for his operettas, particularly those that satirized the social conventions of the time. Born Jakob Eberst to a Jewish family in Cologne, Germany, he studied music from an early age and eventually moved to Paris, where he adopted the name Jacques Offenbach. He became one of the most popular composers of his time, known for his witty and humorous works that often poked fun at the social elite.
