Biography:
The Master of the Rouen Échevinage was a French illuminator who headed a successful workshop in Rouen, producing decorated books (secular and devotional) principally in the third quarter of the 15th century. He was the dominant illuminator in Rouen after the departure of the English in 1449, when the city became a flourishing centre of manuscript production. His career spanned from around 1460 to 1480. The Master of the Rouen Échevinage is known for his distinctive style, characterized by a strong sense of realism and a preference for deep, rich colors. His work is highly regarded for its beauty and craftsmanship, and he is considered one of the most important illuminators of the late medieval period in France.
