The History of Het Scheepvaartmuseum

Het Scheepvaartmuseum serves as the national maritime museum of the Netherlands. Located in Amsterdam, the institution has undergone several transformations in its identity and location. It was formerly known as the National Maritime Museum Amsterdam and has also been referred to as the Nederlands Scheepvaartmuseum Amsterdam. These names reflect its long-standing commitment to preserving the maritime history of the region.

The institution moved to its current building in 1973. This relocation brought the collection to its present site at Oosterdok. The museum's presence in Amsterdam is deeply tied to the history of the city's waterways and its role in global maritime trade. The transition to this specific location allowed for a more permanent home for the vast array of nautical artifacts and historical vessels that define the collection.

The Architecture of the Former Naval Storehouse

The building housing the collection is a former naval storehouse, known as 's Lands Zeemagazijn or Admiraliteits Magazijn. Constructed in 1656, the structure was designed by Daniël Stalpaert. It remains a rijksmonument, preserved within the urban fabric of Amsterdam. The foundation rests upon exactly 1,800 wooden piles driven into the bed of the Oosterdok.

The architectural layout follows a symmetrical arrangement. Four wings extend from a central courtyard, creating a sense of enclosure. This design reflects the building's original purpose as a functional warehouse for the Admiralty of Amsterdam. The massive brick walls and thick wooden beams remain visible, maintaining the integrity of the 17th-century construction. The interior space retains the scale required for its historical role in storing sails, ropes, and anchors.

The Extensive Maritime Collections

The museum manages a vast assembly of approximately 350,000 to 400,000 objects that trace the history of Dutch seafaring. Within these walls, one finds a profound concentration of nautical instruments and globes that once guided sailors across open waters. The cartography collection is particularly significant, featuring rare maps produced by the Blaeu family. These documents offer a precise look at how the world was perceived through the lens of maritime exploration.

Beyond the maps, the collection encompasses a wide array of ship models and a specialized library collection. The presence of technical drawings and photography provides a detailed record of maritime evolution and the people who navigated it. These items exist alongside a collection of 80 historical vessels, providing a tangible connection to the era of sail and steam. The sheer scale of these holdings allows for a quiet study of the tools and vessels that defined an age of navigation.

Notable Ships and Vessels

The presence of historical vessels provides a tangible connection to the maritime past of the Netherlands. Moored outside the building is a replica of the 18th-century ship Amsterdam, which was constructed between 1985 and 1990. This vessel offers a physical sense of the ships that once sailed between the Netherlands and the East Indies. The scale of the replica allows for a direct encounter with the maritime technology of that era.

Inside the collection, the Koningssloep, or Royal Barge, built in 1816, remains a significant object. Alongside it is the ss Christiaan Brunings, an icebreaker and directorship ship dating from 1900. These vessels represent different functional aspects of naval and maritime history, from ceremonial use to specialized service in icy waters.
