The Quiet Presence of Form
Born in 1975 in Blerick, the Netherlands, Sander van Deurzen has spent his life exploring the space between what we see and what we remember. His path led him to the Academy of Fine Arts Maastricht, where he completed his studies in 1997. Today, he lives and works in Amsterdam, balancing his own creative practice with his role as a lecturer at HKU. His work often feels like a conversation with the past, pulling imagery from art history and the mundane details of advertisement brochures to create something entirely new. He takes these fragments—a figure from a travel guide or a small toy—and reassembles them into still lives, portraits, or landscapes that feel both familiar and strangely detached.

He often works with the canvas spread out on the floor, a necessity born from his technique of using sponges to apply diluted acrylic and oil. This method allows for a certain spontaneity, a "painter's rush" that keeps the work from feeling too controlled. He treats color with a particular discipline; he avoids pure black, instead mixing several colors to achieve a deep, complex shade, and he avoids white paint entirely. In his world, white is not a pigment but a presence, found in the natural color of the canvas itself or in areas where paint has been carefully removed to create a line.
