Last Supper

The genius of Filipe Hodart is evident in this set of terracotta statues portraying The Last Supper, making it one of the most impressive sculptural works of the European Renaissance. All the figures are sitting and, although badly damaged, they still maintain their primordial majesty. The originality and importance of this group lies particularly in the clearly Mannerist way the figures are treated as regards their form, revealing close affinities with terracotta sculpture from the region of Bologna. The work was created for the new refectory of the Monastery of Santa Cruz in Coimbra.
