In seinem 1845-Patent definierte Sax das Saxotromba als alt- oder baritone-großes Instrument mit aufrechter Glocke. Sie wurden ursprünglich für den Einsatz von Kavalleriemusikern konzipiert, um ihnen zu helfen, die Köpfe ihrer Pferde mit den Glocken ihrer Instrumente zu schlagen. Konkret als Instrumentenfamilie waren sowohl der schmalborige Saxotrombas als auch die großborigen Saxhörner zusammenzuspielen. Schließlich wurden alle Instrumente mit aufrechten Glocken, unabhängig von ihrer Länge, allgemein bekannt als Saxhörner, sowohl in Europa als auch in den Vereinigten Staaten.
