Von 1890 behauptete sich Maurice Denis als Theoretiker der Pont-Aven-Schule und formulierte die Grundprinzipien, die Gauguin und die Nabis lieben. Diese Leinwand, 1899 gemalt, während im Urlaub in Portier Gästehaus in Le Pouldu, zeigt eine der Familienszenen Denis liebte Malerei. Seine Frau Marthe und ihre jüngste Tochter Bernadette werden von Marthes Schwester Eva und der ältesten Tochter der Denis Noelle flankiert. Denis’ Wahl der Farben gibt ein warmes Gefühl für die Arbeit, und dieser Eindruck wird durch die kontrastierend kühlen Töne des Meeres bei Sonnenuntergang durch das offene Fenster im Hintergrund verstärkt.
