Erst in Brügge gegründet, trat Gerard David 1515 in die Gilde des Malers in Antwerpen ein, wo seine Kompositionen und Motive bald zirkulierten. Dieses gut erhaltene Panel ist stark an Davids Arbeit verschuldet. Die extravaganten Onlooker sind jedoch eine reine Erfindung der Antwerpener Kunst, wie die Landschaftsansicht mit Reisenden, die Waren für den Handel tragen. Aufgrund des Status von Antwerpen als mercantile Zentrum für Nordeuropa waren Szenen der Adoration der Magi besonders beliebt in der Stadt. Sie dienten nicht nur einer devotionalen Nutzung, sondern könnten auch mit dem Auslandsverkehr verbunden sein.
