Ein Notizbuch, das von Fantins Frau aufbewahrt wird, soll die Umstände dieses Bildes aufzeichnen. Der Sitter nannte sich Mme Leroy, ein Name, den der Künstler vermutet hatte, war falsch; und sie bestand darauf, ihr Porträt im Voraus zu bezahlen. Sie begleitete einige ihrer Sitzungen von einem Amerikaner namens Becker, der auch eine Ähnlichkeit von sich aus Fantin in Auftrag gegeben hatte, datierte im folgenden Jahr (Smith College Museum of Art, Northampton, Mass.). Die vollen Identitäten und die Natur ihrer Beziehung bleiben unbekannt.
