Cavé hielt die hochrangigen Posten des Inspektors und des Direktors der Kunstverwaltung während der Regierung von König Louis-Philippe. Ingres malte dieses Porträt bald nach Cavés Heirat 1844 zu Marie-Elisabeth Blavot Boulanger. Es war als Begleiter des Bildes von Cavés Frau gedacht, dass Ingres ein Jahrzehnt früher malte (43.85.3). Nachdem Ingres Cavé über die Dimensionen seiner Frau wieness konsultiert hatte, führte er das Porträt durch die Übertragung einer Zeichnung des Sitters (Musée Ingres, Montauban) auf die Leinwand durch.
