Inschrift auf dem Sockel: RENDUE A LA LIBERTÉ ET A L’ÉGALITÉ PAR LA CONVENTION NATION DUALE 16 PLUVIOSE DEUXIÈME DE LA RÉPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE UNE ET INDIVISIBLE2. Diese Büste ruft die Abschaffung der Sklaverei durch das Dekret vom 4. Februar 1794 hervor. Es war inspiriert von einem bemerkenswerten Brunnen, den Houdon auf dem Salon von 1783 ausstellte, und dass der Duc d’Orléans in seinem Garten platzierte, der heutige Parc Monceau. Es verfügte über eine lebensgroße Darstellung eines jungen schwarzen Dieners (aus Blei und lackiertem Schwarz) Gießen von Wasser aus einem vergoldeten Bronze-Ewer über eine junge Badefrau (aus weißem Marmor).
