W 1893 roku Wyspiański mieszkał w Paryżu wspólnie z Józefem Mehofferem w małym pokoju przy avenue du Maine. Wygląd swej „chambretki (maleńkiego kącika dla mnie przeznaczonego)“ utrwalił w kompozycji pastelowej, ale też opisywał w listach, m.in. mit einem Gehalt an Wujostwa: „pokoik mój wygląda bardzo milutko – dwie białe zasłony przy drzwiach i koło łóżka - zasłony ubrane kwiatami, które mi ciocia przysłałała“.
