Dank der Ähnlichkeit der Worte, die visuelle Kombination von Eichenbaum (Bai in Chinesisch und Haku auf Japanisch) und Hirsch (lu in Chinesisch und Roku auf Japanisch) bot Wünsche für ein hohes Gehalt (literal, "einhundert"). Das Thema wurde in Japan von Shen Nanping, einem chinesischen Maler, der in Nagasaki während der 1730er Jahre lebte und lehrte, populär gemacht.
