Van Gogh tauchte in die Malerei der bunten Obstgärten um Arles im Süden Frankreichs ein, wo er sich im Februar 1888 niederließ. Die Struktur der Zweige der Aprikosenbäume ist durch die Blüte noch deutlich sichtbar und seine Pinselstriche folgen der Richtung der vertikalen Baumstämme. Er malte eine Reihe von Bildern von Obstgärten während seiner produktiven Aktivitäten in Arles. Sein anfänglicher Optimismus, ausgedrückt in Briefen an seinen Bruder Theo, ermutigte Gauguin, sich ihm dort anzuschließen. Sie streiten sich aber bald, weil sie gemäßigt unvereinbar sind, und im folgenden Jahr Van Gogh
