schreiben an seinen bruder theo aus der anstalt in Saint-Rémy anfang juli 1889 , van gogh beschrieb seine neueste arbeit in der serie, die er im juni begonnen hatte : " Ich habe eine leinwand mit zypressen mit einigen ähren , einige mohnblumen , ein blauer himmel wie ein stück schottisches plaid ; ersteres mit einer dicken pastosen farbe bemalt . . . und das weizenfeld in der sonne , was die extreme hitze darstellt , auch sehr dick . " van gogh betrachtete dies sun-drenched landschaft als einer seiner " beste " sommer leinwände , und er reproduzierte die komposition in einer schilfstiftzeichnung ( van gogh museum , Amsterdam ) und in zwei varianten in ölfarbe ( nationalgallerie , London , und privatsammlung ) .
