Cardi behauptete, der kardinal mochte Cigoli's version am besten . Stilistisch , das gemälde zeigt eigenschaften von Caravaggio's reifen Roman-period stil . Die formen sind sichtbar close-up und durch dramatisches licht modelliert , das fehlen von tiefe oder hintergrund , und der psychologische realismus von , der folterer , wer scheint sadismus mit mitleid zu mischen . Pilatus , im einklang mit der tradition , wird als eher neutrale und vielleicht fast sympathische figur dargestellt .
