Friedrich verband landschaftsmotive mit religiöser symbolik , und dieses bild repräsentiert die hoffnung auf erlösung durch den christlichen glauben . Im vordergrund hat ein verkrüppelter mann seine krücken verlassen und sitzt mit erhobenen händen vor einem kruzifix an einem felsen . Die felsen und immergrünen bäume können als symbole des glaubens interpretiert werden , und die visionäre gotische kathedrale, die aus dem nebel hervorgeht, verspricht das leben nach dem tod . es gibt eine zweite version dieses bildes im museum für kunst und kulturgeschichte , Dortmund .
