Sculptor Augusts Bija, who was born in the territory of Latvia, studied at the Christiania and Brussels art academies. Bija was very popular in the 1920s and 1930s in Belgium as a favourite portraitist, creating several hundred portraits for medals and monuments. The plaquette shows the bust of Jean Delville in profile. Jean Delville (1867–1953) was a Belgian symbolist painter, author, poet, polemicist, teacher, and theosophist. This item is part of the collection of Belgian medals. Objects in this collection date back to the 19th century until the early 1930s making it possible to trace the development of Medal art in Belgium over the course of a century.
