Born into a long line of artists, this pleasant portrait depicts Luis and Alejandro Ferrant y Fischermans, the painter’s nephews and stepsons. One of the most significant examples of the Romantic children’s portrait, this painting was done by Luis Ferrant y Llausás, already considered in the Isabelline period as an excellent portrait artist, who demonstrated his special sensibility for children’s portraits on numerous occasions. / The children are shown in a garden, where there is a pilaster with a classical structure and in the background a fountain topped by a sculpture of Cupid, both references probably harking back to the painter’s training in Rome. The vegetation is composed of bunches of violets that, just like the dog, establish a series of symbolic motifs around the children.
