early life and education Charles Neilson, born in Elgin, United Kingdom (1889), embarked on a journey that would tragically cut short his artistic aspirations but nonetheless leave an indelible mark on Scotland’s early 20th-century art scene. His formative years were spent at Elgin Primary School, providing him with foundational knowledge before he pursued higher education at Aberdeen University in 1913.
A Master of Arts degree from Aberdeen University equipped Neilson with intellectual tools that would later inform his artistic vision—a perspective shaped by humanist ideals and a keen appreciation for the natural world.

His canvases bear witness to a remarkable talent—a sensitivity to color and form that captures the essence of Scottish landscapes with breathtaking accuracy.
Among his most celebrated pieces is “Untitled,” housed in the National Trust for Scotland’s Elgin gallery – a poignant depiction of serene Scottish scenery, executed with meticulous detail. This artwork exemplifies Neilson's ability to distill complex emotions into visual representations.
"Aberdeen Landscape," created around 1912 and exhibited at the Aberdeen Art Gallery, showcases his masterful command of oil paint on canvas. The painting’s composition—characterized by sweeping vistas and subtle tonal variations—reflects a profound connection with the Scottish countryside.
military service and legacy Neilson's life took an unforeseen turn when he enlisted as a private in the Gordon Highlanders in 1914, answering the call to defend his nation during the tumultuous period of World War I.
