Eugenio Lucas Velázquez fue un pintor y alumno romántico tardío de la Academia de Madrid, kwon como seguidor personal de Velázquez y Goya, principalmente en sus pinturas sobre lienzo. Sin embargo, en sus dibujos, nos muestran otros estilos diferentes – abstractos o realistas– y temas: paisajes urbanos, paisajes o género. Esta vista de Venecia se realizó durante un viaje en el verano de 1868 a lo largo de la costa de Francia, Mónaco, Italia y Suiza.
