Martin Van Buren vino a Albany en 1812 como senador estatal. Para 1816 era fiscal general y había organizado una poderosa máquina política que le ayudó a ser senador de los Estados Unidos. Fue gobernador del estado de Nueva York en 1829, renunciando a convertirse en Andrew Jackson
