La expresión y postura de Mäda Primavesi transmiten un notable grado de confianza para una niña de nueve años, incluso una que, por su propia cuenta, era voluntaria y un tomboy. Klimt hizo numerosos bosquejos preliminares para este retrato, experimentando con diferentes poses, trajes y fondos antes de decidir mostrar Mäda de pie en un vestido especialmente hecho en medio de una profusión de patrones primaverales. La imagen da testimonio del sofisticado gusto de sus padres, banquero e industrial Otto Primavesi y su esposa Eugenia, quienes eran fervientes partidarios del arte y el diseño vaneses progresivos. De hecho, Klimt pronto pintó el retrato de Eugenia (Museo Municipal de Arte de Toyota, Japón). Esta pintura fue confiscada por los nazis de Jenny Pulitzer Steiner en 1938 en Viena y restituida a ella en 1951.
