Felice (o Félix) Beato (1835-1907) es el fotógrafo más conocido que ha trabajado en Japón en el siglo XIX. Operaba en Yokohama de 1863 a 1877, viajando por Japón para fotografiar paisajes y ciudades, volviendo a su estudio para tomar retratos de los estadounidenses y europeos que viven en Yokohama. Beato también vendió sus famosas vistas de la Guerra de Crimea, China e India a sus clientes de estudio. Este retrato de Pruyn captura parte de su apariencia de cuidado atribuible a los conflictos diplomáticos y militares que llenaron su tiempo durante su estancia de cuatro años en Japón.
