Corot pintó este boceto en el lago Nemi, sureste de Roma, en junio o julio de 1843. Adaptó la vista para dos pinturas, Vista de Genzano con Rider y Peasant (2009.400.30) y Genzano: Goatherd y Village (Phillips Collection, Washington). Corot se cree que ha dado ambos a los amigos, pero mantuvo este boceto hasta el final de su vida.
