Sargent llegó a París en 1874 y se inscribió en el estudio de enseñanza del retrato Carolus-Duran, amigo de Edouard Manet e impresionistas. Bajo la influencia de Carolus, Sargent participó en el entusiasmo parisino predominante por España y las cosas españolas. Probablemente hizo este estudio de retrato dramáticamente iluminado de la mujer romaní española durante sus años estudiantiles en París. La pintura fue entregada al Metropolitano por George A. Hearn, un fideicomisario y el donante más importante del Museo de las pinturas americanas a principios del siglo XX.
