Las locomotoras fueron adquiridas en 1889 por la Companhia Nacional (CN) para la línea Dão (de Santa Comba Dão a Viseu), donde circularon hasta 1947. Se estandarizaron y serían muy similares a la orden anterior (CP E80), que facilitó el mantenimiento y la operación. En el CN, además de la numeración, se les dieron nombres asociados a la historia y geografía del territorio en el que iban a operar, que los distingue de los Tua, con numeración similar.
