En 1736 el poeta inglés y dramaturgo Edward Young viajaba por Francia con su familia cuando su hijastra, Elizabeth Temple, murió en Lyon. Prohibido interponer sus restos en el cementerio católico de la ciudad debido a su religión, se vio obligado a buscar el cementerio protestante en medio de la noche. Su poema romántico e indeleblemente macabre relativo a la historia, La queja o Pensamientos nocturnos sobre la vida, la muerte y la inmortalidad (1742–45), fue especialmente popular durante el período de la Revolución Francesa. Este es un estudio para una pintura Vafflard expuesto en el Salón de 1804 (Musée des Beaux-Arts, Angoulême).
