The Artistic Evolution of John Walker
Born in Birmingham, England, John Walker is a painter and printmaker who currently resides in Maine. His early artistic training took place at the Moseley School of Art and the Birmingham School of Art, followed by studies at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. His early works often utilized acrylic paint to combine three-dimensional shapes with flatter elements. During the early 1970s, Walker created a series of large Blackboard Pieces using chalk , as well as the Juggernaut works which utilized dry pigment.
As his career progressed, Walker's technique evolved. In the late 1970s, he began using oil paint more frequently and his work featured allusions to painters such as Henri Matisse , Édouard Manet , and Francisco Goya. This period was also notable for the use of canvas collage , a method involving the application of separately painted patches of canvas onto the main canvas. While teaching at the Victoria College of the Arts in Melbourne, he produced the Oceania series, which incorporates elements of native Oceanic art.
