In a poignant twist of fate, 1879 brought both his greatest professional triumph and his final departure. In February of that year, he was elected a full member of the Royal Scottish Academy, reaching the pinnacle of his profession. Tragically, his health had been failing, and he passed away on May 11, 1879, shortly after this hard-won honor.
