Pierre-Eugène Clairin was a French painter, illustrator, printmaker, and resistance fighter. Born in Cambrai, France, he studied in England before entering the École des beaux-arts de Paris in the atelier of Fernand Cormon. His life was marked by significant service; he served in the cavalry and later as a war pilot in the Armée de l'air, earning decorations including the Croix de guerre, the Médaille militaire, and the Légion d'honneur.

His artistic journey led him to the atelier of Paul Sérusier at the Académie Ranson, where he met Maurice Denis and Édouard Vuillard, who introduced him to engraving and lithography.
