Shepard Alonzo Mount

Shepard Alonzo Mount (1804–1868) was a National Academy of Design-trained American artist during the mid-nineteenth century that painted favorable genres of realism during the time such as still-life and landscapes. He found inspiration from subjects and themes found in local areas around him. He was best known for portraiture. Mount was highly regarded for his ability to capture a meticulously rendered likeness and personality of his portrait subjects. ### Biography Mount was born on July 17, 1804, in Setauket, New York. He was one of five children of Julia Ann Hawkins (1782–1841) and Thomas Shepard Mount (1778–1814). Other siblings include eldest Henry Smith Mount (1802–1841), Robert Nelson (1806–1883), the prominent artist William Sidney Mount (1807–1868), and Ruth Hawkins (1808–1888). Until the death of their father Thomas Shepard in 1814, the family operated an inn and farm. After settling her husband’s estate, Julia moved with her five children back to the homestead of her parents Ruth and Jonas Hawkins, which was located several miles away in the neighboring village of Stony Brook. Shepard’s introduction to the fine arts would come through more practical craftsmanship, which would later influence his unique style. Early career and education Mount’s artistic journey started when he apprenticed with a carriage builder named James Brewster in New Haven, Connecticut. This experience refined his eye for color theory, style, and design. In 1827, Mount reunited with his brothers Henry and William in New York City, where he enrolled in drawing classes at the National Academy of Design. He also practiced drawing in the evenings alongside his brothers. Mount’s early career involved producing still-life paintings for exhibition. His first exhibited work was in 1829 at the National Academy of Design, titled Still Life; Composition. He was heavily influenced by his older brother Henry and received recognition for his still-life paintings, particularly those featuring fish. ### Style and Technique Mount’s style and technique were characterized by his attention to detail and ability to capture the essence of his subjects. His still-life paintings showcased his skill in rendering everyday life scenes. He also created landscapes, like Hudson River Scene, which depicted a golden past and featured ornately dressed native americans. Mount's portraits were highly regarded for their meticulous rendering of likeness and personality. He made a living painting portraits in Athens, Pennsylvania, where competition was scarce, ensuring a likely prospect in commissions. His portrait subjects included relatives and friends, which he continued to paint upon his return to Stony Brook in 1830. Mount’s work can be found in various museums, including the Syracuse University Art Collection and the Butler Institute of American Art. ### Major Achievements & Legacy Shepard Alonzo Mount achieved fame as a painter who chronicled rural life on Long Island during the mid-nineteenth century. He was recognized for his exceptional skill in capturing realism—a hallmark of his era—and he established himself as one of America’s leading genre artists. His meticulous portraits and evocative landscapes continue to inspire admiration, demonstrating the enduring power of observation and artistic expression. Mount's legacy resides not only in his impressive oeuvre but also in his contribution to shaping American art history. ### Further Information Mount’s dedication to capturing the subtleties of human emotion and natural beauty cemented his place as a pivotal figure in nineteenth-century American painting.
