Francisca Carvalho: Exploring Memory and Identity Through Artistic Mediums

Francisca Carvalho, born in Coimbra, Portugal, in 1981, is a Portuguese artist whose work delves into profound themes of memory, identity, and the intricate connection between art and reality. Her artistic journey began with formal training at AR.CO’s Advanced Course in Visual Arts and continued with a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy from Lisbon University, equipping her with intellectual tools to inform her creative explorations. Carvalho’s artistic practice spans diverse mediums – painting, drawing, installation, and video – each serving as a vehicle for conveying complex ideas about the human experience. Early Influences: Carvalho cites Surrealist artists like René Magritte and Giorgio Morandi as formative influences, particularly their ability to evoke emotion through seemingly simple compositions and unsettling juxtapositions. These masters demonstrated how subtle visual cues could generate powerful psychological responses, shaping Carvalho’s artistic sensibility and inspiring her exploration of dreamlike imagery alongside understated realism. Her paintings often employ muted palettes and layered textures, reflecting a deliberate consideration of materiality and surface qualities. Carvalho favors techniques that allow for subtle shifts in perception, inviting viewers to contemplate the passage of time and the subjective nature of experience. She meticulously crafts her canvases with an eye toward capturing nuances of light and shadow—a characteristic that underscores her commitment to portraying the complexities inherent in human consciousness. Carvalho’s artistic vision finds expression in her series “Japan,” where she painstakingly captures fleeting moments and impressions—a testament to her fascination with capturing ephemeral beauty. The artworks showcase a masterful blend of observation and imagination, mirroring the artist's own contemplative approach to life itself. Her pieces resonate with viewers through their understated elegance and evocative symbolism. Exhibitions: Carvalho’s dedication to sharing her artistic vision has resulted in notable exhibitions at Lehmann + Silva Gallery, Outono Projects, Atelier Concorde, and Behance, establishing her presence within the contemporary art community. These venues have provided platforms for showcasing her work to a wider audience and fostering dialogue about its conceptual underpinnings. Recognition & Awards: While specific accolades remain undisclosed, Carvalho’s unwavering commitment to artistic exploration has garnered critical acclaim and solidified her position as a rising talent within the Portuguese art landscape. Her ongoing research into artistic techniques and philosophical concepts underscores her intellectual curiosity and contributes to a broader understanding of contemporary artistic expression. Her individual exhibitions include “Chordata,” Culturgest, Porto (2016), “Hasta,” National Handicrafts and Handlooms Museum, New Delhi, India (2018), “Tiger Mountain,” A Maior, Viseu (2018), “Loom,” ArtWorks, Póvoa de Varzim (2019); “Às nonas, Midas nos dedos medram e mondam” at the Almada Municipal Gallery (2021); “Cosmic Tones” at CIAJG, Guimarães (2021). She participated in the exhibition of the five finalists of the “Art on Paper Navigator Prize,” Chiado 8, Lisbon (2018). Also in 2018, she was awarded scholarships from the Oriente Foundation and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, conducting practical research in India on patterns, natural dyes, kalamkari, and hand block printing in Rajasthan and Gujarat, India. Her participation in group exhibitions includes: “Plano de Contingência” at the Cristina Guerra Gallery, Lisbon (2023), “Ninguém. Só eu,” Centro de Arte Oliva (2022); “Farsa” at Sesc Pompeia, São Paulo, Brazil; “Isolation, Oscillation,” Outono Projects, New York (2021); “Triângulo,” Brotéria, Lisbon (2021); “Orto di Incendio,” Instituto Nazionale per la Grafica di Roma (2019); “Gabinete de Moda,” Gabinete, Lisbon (2017); “Small Victories,” School 33, Baltimore (2016); “Francisca Carvalho and Pedro Faria,” Croxhapox, Ghent, Belgium (2014). Henri Michaux says, “to create a being, one must create a situation.” In this exhibition, I present a small group of paintings on glass of varying dimensions. The scale, temperature, and consistency of the material – glass – dictate the visual rhythm between the paintings, and in each one, this rhythm emerges from the insistent composition of certain geometric forms that can also be found in Indian Tantra drawings and El Lissitzky's posters.
