Johan Gabriëlse began his training in the classrooms of the National School for Teachers, moving later to the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. His hands learned the discipline of the line under the guidance of August Allebé and Nicolaas van der Waay. He was a man of many tools, working as a painter, an etcher, and a lithographer.
