À l'intérieur d'une caverne sombre, considérablement éclairée par une torche, le corps boiteux mais puissant de Christ est sur le point d'être abaissé dans sa tombe. La lumière à l'horizon signale soit le coucher du soleil sur sa vie terrestre, soit le lever du soleil en prévision d'un nouveau commencement avec sa résurrection. Cette huile richement peinte sur cuivre a été commandée par un chanoine de la cathédrale de San Pietro à Bologne comme cadeau à une figure importante à Rome, mais à la fin le chanoine l'a gardé et envoyé une copie par Guido Reni.
