Au cours de l'été 1881, Manet fit plusieurs dessins pour son ami, le poète Stéphane Mallarmé (1842-1898), qui, en 1877, publia des poèmes d'Edgar Allan Poe. Les poèmes d'Edgar Poe fut réédité en 1888, mais les illustrations de Manet's ne parurent que dans l'édition de 1889. Ce dessin accompagnait le poème Annabel Lee. Le poème
