ISHIKAWA Kangan a étudié le nanga traditionnel* sous KOMURO Suiun. Il a ensuite établi son propre style original, en s'inspirant de la peinture occidentale et du riche environnement naturel de sa ville natale. Son approche s'inspire également de la technique du mōrōtai ou du style hazy utilisée par YOKOYAMA Taikan parmi d'autres artistes qui, comme Ishikawa, regardaient l'art occidental. Dans cette pièce, une douceur distincte enveloppe le berger et les montagnes, quelque chose que les autres peintres ne voient pas couramment. Malgré de grandes attentes pour son avenir, Ishikawa est décédé à l'âge de 46 ans.
