Le petit-fils du patriote et orfèvre Paul Revere, Paul Joseph Revere (1832-1863) fréquenta l'Académie de Milton dès 1840. Il est ensuite allé au Harvard College et a servi comme colonel pendant la guerre civile. En 1859, Revere a épousé Lucretia Watson Lunt.
