A Brush with Pennsylvania: The World of Susan Hawker
Susan Hawker, born in 1949, is a name synonymous with the enduring spirit of Pennsylvania Impressionism and a deeply felt connection to the natural world. While her artistic journey began as a personal exploration, it has blossomed into a celebrated career capturing the subtle nuances of light, color, and form that define the landscapes and wildlife of her beloved home state. Hawker’s work isn't merely representation; it is an emotional response translated onto canvas – a quiet reverence for the beauty often overlooked in our hurried lives. She continues to paint today, adding layers of depth and experience to a body of work already rich with atmosphere and feeling.
Early Influences & Artistic Development
Hawker’s path toward becoming a professional artist wasn't direct. Initially drawn to the practicalities of life, she pursued other endeavors before fully embracing her passion for painting. However, the seeds of artistic sensibility were sown early on through a keen observation of nature and an innate sensitivity to color. Her formative years spent immersed in the Pennsylvania countryside provided a constant source of inspiration. While not formally trained in the traditional sense, Hawker’s dedication led her to study with renowned artists who emphasized direct painting from life – a technique that would become central to her style. This emphasis on *plein air* painting allowed her to develop an intimate understanding of how light transforms a scene throughout the day and across seasons. She absorbed the lessons of the American Impressionists, particularly those who focused on capturing fleeting moments in nature, but quickly forged her own distinct voice.
The Essence of Pennsylvania: Subject Matter & Style
Hawker’s paintings are a love letter to Pennsylvania. Rolling hills bathed in golden sunlight, weathered barns standing sentinel against the sky, and the delicate beauty of wildflowers all feature prominently in her work. She is particularly known for her depictions of wildlife – deer grazing in meadows, birds taking flight, foxes moving stealthily through the woods. These animals are not simply subjects; they are integral parts of the landscape, embodying its wildness and resilience. Her style can be described as a contemporary take on Impressionism, characterized by loose brushstrokes, vibrant color palettes, and a masterful use of light and shadow. She doesn’t strive for photographic realism but rather seeks to convey the *feeling* of being present in nature – the warmth of the sun on your skin, the scent of wildflowers in the air, the quiet stillness of a forest.
Major Achievements & Recognition
Over the course of her career, Susan Hawker has garnered significant recognition for her artistic achievements. Her paintings have been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums throughout Pennsylvania and beyond, earning her a devoted following among collectors and art enthusiasts. She is frequently invited to participate in prestigious plein air painting events, where she demonstrates her skill and passion for capturing the landscape directly from life. Hawker’s work has also been featured in several publications dedicated to American Impressionism and wildlife art. Beyond accolades, however, her greatest achievement lies in her ability to connect with viewers on an emotional level – to transport them to a place of peace and tranquility through her evocative paintings.
Historical Significance & Lasting Legacy
Susan Hawker’s contribution to contemporary American art extends beyond the beauty of her individual paintings. She represents a continuation of the Pennsylvania Impressionist tradition, breathing new life into a style that has long been celebrated for its ability to capture the essence of the landscape. In an increasingly digital world, Hawker's work serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of connecting with nature and appreciating the simple beauty around us. Her dedication to painting from life – a practice that demands patience, observation, and a deep understanding of light and color – sets her apart and inspires other artists to embrace the challenges and rewards of *plein air* painting. As she continues to create, Susan Hawker is solidifying her place as a significant figure in American art, leaving behind a legacy of evocative landscapes and wildlife paintings that will continue to resonate with viewers for generations to come.
