He is considered one of the best French horlogers and was among the finest watchmakers in the world during his time. Lépine is known for his contributions to watchmaking technology, including the invention of the Lépine caliber, characterized by the suppression of the fusée and the replacement of the plate with a barillet denté. He was appointed clockmaker to Louis XV and Louis XVI, for whom he made 20 clocks. Lépine's work is highly regarded, and his timepieces are among the most expensive ever sold at auction.
